Bank Indonesia is the central bank of the Republic of Indonesia, led by a governor from a government official with a term of 5 years. The Bank has a mission to maintain the Rupiah stability value by promoting financial system stability for Indonesia’s long term sustainable development and maintaining monetary stability.
Current governor of Bank Indonesia is Darmin Nasution which replaces "Boediono". Budiono currently becomes a vice president in the Indonesian presidential election in 2009
Bank Indonesia also possesses the authority to issue regulations, grant, and revoke banking license and certain banking activities licenses, conduct supervisory functins and impose sanctions to banks.
Bank Indonesia is in charge of regulating and ensuring a smooth national payment system, booth cash and non cash. To provide direction to payment system development, Bank Indonesia has prepared a National Payment System blue print that is implemented by issuing various policies to reduce risks in interbank payment activities as well as to increase payment system efficiency. In terms of cash payment system, Bank Indonesia is the only institution authorirized to issue and distribute the Rupiah currency as well as to withdraw the currency from circulation.
In line with recent development in information technology, Bank Indonesia implements an electronic based payment services through its Bank Indonesia Real Time Gross Settlement (BI-RTGS) system.
Bank Indonesia also holds the authority to issue licenses for payment system service providers (transfer, clearing, etc) for certain institutions. Bank Indonesia also supervises the activities of other payment system service providers by requiring them to submit reports.
